Overview

The PC gaming landscape has become fragmented, with 23 major launchers replacing what used to be a one-click experience. This complexity has frustrated users and disrupted gameplay flow. I set out to design a solution that simplifies and unifies the launcher experience.

Research

Secondary Research: I analyzed industry reports, forum discussions, and data on market value (games: $195.65B vs. film: $26B in 2022). PC gamers are among the most loyal and spend-heavy users, yet they're burdened by launcher bloat, DRM, memory usage, and poor social integration.

User Interviews: Qualitative interviews revealed users want simplicity, transparency, and seamless access to their social circles. Battle.net was often cited as the gold standard for usability.

Persona: Created and iterated a user persona informed by surveys and interviews to guide decisions throughout the project.

Design Process

Early Concepts:

Explored ideas like launcher repair tools and download transparency apps. Ultimately, the direction shifted toward a centralized launcher interface to streamline the entire experience.

MVP User Flow:

  • Browse/select games

  • Connect/import launchers

  • Add/message/search friends

  • View notifications

Sketches & Wireframes

Started with low-fidelity sketches and wireframes in Figma, grounded in user insights and heuristic evaluations.

Guerilla Usability Testing

Ran Discord-based tests with 5 users. Issues included unclear copy, unintuitive messaging layout, and empty launcher views.

Visual Design

Style Guide: Developed a brand identity and logo to guide high-fidelity visuals.

High-Fidelity Prototype: Designed in Figma, drawing on trends from top gaming apps and launchers.

Usability Testing (Round 1 & 2)

Tested with 10 users over video calls. Tasks revealed key issues:

  • Confusion over owned vs. browsable games

  • Cluttered import screen

  • Hidden favorite/star button

  • No Steam launcher integration

  • Patch notes distracting from CTAs
