Project Overview
Tom Ford Beauty is a luxury brand with a powerful, established visual identity. My role centered around ensuring cohesive brand design across web, mobile, and print touchpoints—while carefully advocating for accessibility improvements. Working with such a tightly controlled luxury brand meant navigating rigid guidelines, especially when it came to color usage and contrast.

Working with such a tightly controlled luxury brand meant navigating rigid guidelines, especially when it came to color usage and contrast.
Design Challenge
One of the primary UX challenges arose from WCAG accessibility compliance, particularly regarding color contrast. The fragrance homepage, which featured Tom Ford’s Private Blend fragrance imagery, used white text over richly detailed photography. This led to insufficient contrast, especially for visually impaired users.
Although I consistently raised these concerns, advocating for overlays or alternative solutions, brand restrictions prevented us from implementing most changes at the time. The Tom Ford visual standard prioritizes luxury aesthetics—often at the expense of contrast levels. There was limited flexibility to deviate from art-directed compositions, especially on flagship visuals.

Approach + Process
Despite the constraints, I leaned into design thinking to balance brand elegance with usability:
Audit & Reporting: I delivered detailed audits across pages and devices, pinpointing high-risk contrast issues.
Mobile Adaptation: I explored ways to increase legibility on mobile by adjusting line weight, spacing, and background blur, working within the brand's parameters.
Cross-Platform Alignment: I collaborated with internal and external teams to ensure all brand assets—from digital to print—reflected the same tone, palette, and typographic hierarchy.
Documentation: I created internal reports outlining accessibility concerns, annotated with examples and WCAG references for the development and design teams.
While I wasn’t positioned to enforce changes directly, I ensured my documentation and proposals were as clear and actionable as possible.

Outcome + Reflections
Though many of the proposed accessibility improvements weren’t implemented during my contract, I was pleased to later observe that Tom Ford Beauty has since begun integrating WCAG-compliant practices.
This project sharpened my ability to work within highly constrained, non-agile environments, where change is slow and brand fidelity is paramount. It also reinforced how important it is to document, advocate, and find incremental wins even when larger systemic change isn't possible in the moment.
Working with Tom Ford Beauty taught me how to uphold luxury brand standards while still pushing for inclusive design, and how to collaborate effectively within a layered, stakeholder-heavy brand ecosystem.
